Hi.

Welcome to Everyday Refinement. Here I write about dressing well, but sensibly. Where beauty and utility inspire authentic style and a better wardrobe.

A Season of Outside Dressing

A Season of Outside Dressing

Let’s celebrate a summer state of mind — relax, rest, retreat, refresh, lounge, and gather on the patio and around the pool!

Dreaming of summer . . .
Nothing says summer quite like entertaining on the backyard patio or lounging around the pool.  Summer recreation or relaxation doesn’t have to be a grand get-a-way to an exotic destination. Rethink your point of view about a summer escape — consider a staycation of resting, relaxing, refreshing, lounging, and gathering with guest on the patio or around the poolside.  Everything seems merrier when it is drenched in sunshine and water.

Just Add Summer:

Backyard summer fun and entertaining can be effortless and chic, especially if the seasonal closet is fully stocked with warm-weather essentials for recreation and relaxing. We want low maintenance pieces that pay-off in high style. May I suggest a few pieces to consider for entertainment on the patio or lounging by the pool.

Patio: Striped Tees, Twill shorts, Printed maxis, Colored chinos, Safari jackets, Boho tunics, White jeans, Cropped pants, Gingham shirts, Eyelet Tops, Floral dresses, Pima tanks, Silk kimonos, Coin sandals, Assorted espadrilles, Metallic moccasins, Raffia shopper, and  a Woven messenger bag.

Poolside: Flattering swimsuit, Alluring kaftan, Flirty sarong, Denim shorts, Linen shirt, High-low tee, Oversized tote bag, Cork sandals, Colorful flip-flops, Painted Toes, Large-rimmed sunglasses, Wide-brimmed hat, Waterproof makeup, and Sunscreen.

Style in Ten Minutes or Less

For Patio
Minutes 1 - 2: Pull on the top that makes you feel comfortable. An eyelet top, a gingham shirt, a boho tunic, a striped tee, or a colored tank.

Minutes 3 - 4: Go for fun on the bottom with a brightly colored chino, a cropped pant that skims the ankles, a printed maxi skirt with pizzazz, or chic white jeans.

Minutes 5 - 6: Choose to slip your feet into comfy, open toed flats or low-heeled wedges that  give a little lift. Wear a pair that pulls a color from your outfit or a metallic hue. Cork sandals, espadrilles, driving moccasins, or wedges.

Minutes 8 - 9:  Do away with the work bag and opt for a softer, unstructured one. All you really need is a lipstick, smartphone, id or driver’s license, credit card, and keys.  Try a raffia or braided hobo or bucket bag.

Minutes 9 - 10: Keep makeup minimal and focus on dewy skin with soft shades on the eyelids, a coat of mascara on the lashes, and a nude color on the lips.  Style hair in soft waves or pulled back into a ponytail.  Spritz on a light, fresh fragrance.

Style Sheet -- Patio to Poolside.jpg

For Poolside:
Minutes 1 - 2: Begin with a swimsuit that flatters your shape and makes you feel attractive.  The choice to cover or reveal the belly button is entirely a personal one.  Bikini or maillot/tank suit.

Minutes 3 - 4: Tie on a sarong, pull on a comfy sweatshirt or denim shorts, slip into oversized white linen shirt or a brightly colored kaftan to keep you covered to and from the pool party and in-between.

Minutes 5 -6: Slide your feet into colored flip flops or slides.

Minutes 7 - 8: Shield your face from the sun with a wide brim hat. Don shades to safeguard eyes from harmful rays of the sun. Carry an oversized canvas or straw bag to tote your towel, cover-up, and other essentials items for fun in the sun.

Minutes 9 - 10: Make-up should be barely there.  Substitute your foundation or mineral powder for SPF, a coat of waterproof mascara for the lashes, and a tinted lip balm for a hint of color on the lips.
