A Shirt for When We Don't Want to Wear Pants

A Shirt for When We Don't Want to Wear Pants

The beauty of the shirt-dress is a lesson in versatility and the myriad ways we can style it!

I’m the gal that loves the contrasting effect of masculine and feminine. I’ve long had an attraction to, as well as, admiration of gentlemen inspired details: the tailoring, the fabrics, the comfort, and the ease of these garments. It should come as no surprise that a shirt-dress is the garment I elect to dress in (no pun intended) when I don’t want to wear pants. To me, the shirt-dress pays homage to a modern woman’s sensibility in the way of sartorial preferences for timeless design, essentiality, effortlessness, and the genius of form plus function.

A shirt-dress is a type of dress that borrows sartorial details from the male shirt, making it a quintessential icon of style and function. It, literally, breaks down the fundamental paradox of modern female dressing — women much like their male counterparts prefer fashions that are practical and comfortable.

Originally, the shirt-dress was commonly referred to as the shirtwaist. The shirtwaist was constructed from cotton shirting fabric that featured a front button closure, close-fitted sleeves, with turnover collar and cuffs. Today a shirt-dress is frequently constructed without a waistband. Because a shirt-dress has a relaxed fit, it may need the use of a belt to accentuate the waist.

Shirt-dresses give the perception that one has put thoughtful consideration into their appearance when really it didn’t require much deliberation or effort.  It’s the quintessential shirt/dress that goes the distance and impressively blurs the line between weekday and weekend, office and off-duty, or day and night.  The shirt-dress lets you take a less is more approach to how you dress from morning to midnight. All it requires is a simple coordination of essential accessories for a shirt-dress to suit the time or place. The shirt-dress has versatility and ease woven into its seams.

The shirt-dress nails instant style. Compatible with a wide range of textiles, its classic shape assumes a completely separate personality when fashioned from an assortment of fabrics. When fashioned from silk — an unassuming shirt-dress becomes the embodiment of sophistication and refinement. When constructed from a crisp cotton shirting — the shirt-dress represents poise and refinement. When constructed from linen or seersucker — the shirt-dress alludes to an easy attitude of chic.

Styling Tips:

  1. Style the shirt-dress with a belt to accentuate the narrowest part of your waist.

  2. Leave a few buttons undone to showcase a favorite necklace.

  3. A relaxed or loose shirt-dress is something you can slip over your swimsuit and checkout the local shops/markets or wear for low-key occasions such as beach lunch or morning coffee meet-up.

  4. A simple maxi-length shirt-dress is an elegant choice for weddings or garden parties.

  5. Choose a colorful hue to brighten the simple shape.

  6. For off-duty or travel, the shirt-dress need be styled only minimally — thong sandals or sneakers and a backpack or tote.

  7. For the office, select a shirt-dress in a silk, silk-blend or cotton poplin — belt to define the loose fit, layer under a blazer, unbutton the collar, and pair with pumps or blocked heels -- for a polished appearance.

  8. The beauty of the shirt-dress is  a lesson in versatility -- the myriad ways you can style it —worn open with a silk slip dress underneath, over a cami and denim shorts, leave a few buttons undone at the hemline and showcase a sexy heel or a pair of stonewashed denim, roll the sleeves and pair with ankle or cowgirl boots, keep it simple with sandals and a straw bag, brogues and backpack, skinny pants and lace cami, or sneakers and a basket bag.

Because I believe strongly in building a wardrobe of better garments, the shirt-dress checks the box as a go-to and go-everywhere piece for endless styling options. It bridges the gap between fashionable and indispensable, chic and appropriate, as well as versatile and practical.  The shirt-dress is a foundational piece on which to build a functional and fashionable wardrobe. The shirt-dress translates into an uncomplicated sensibility to dressing.
