Spring Blooms -- freshly picked fashions

Spring Blooms -- freshly picked fashions

Every spring, fashion introduces a fresh pickings of sartorial designs and creations. This season celebrates modern versions of the enduring classics and essentials, that we love, but updated in elevated utility separates, softly tailored silhouettes, vivid sunset shades, and pragmatic details to simplify the everyday warm-weather wardrobe.

With the advent of a new season, I become intrigued about the designs, silhouettes, and trends from the seasonal fashion collections. I’m always curious to how the fashion media and apparel brands will interpret and reimagine the designer collections into coherent, wardrobe concepts for the consumer.

It is from individual clothing pieces that we build and select a wardrobe. To build on the seasonal wardrobe, we have to sort and filter through the “what is new” and the “what is now” offerings of fashion, to select the silhouettes, designs, and trends that are relevant and dress us for our warm-weather activities.  In my humble opinion, this season’s fashion celebrates some of the freshest and inspirational silhouettes and designs. Spring 2019 is in bloom -- freshly picked with loads of wardrobe options!

Sunset Shades:

The runways resembled the heavenly hues of a mid-summer sunset: blood orange, canary yellow, flame red, ripe blueberry, and muted purples. If you are the individual that loves to wear optimistic pops of color, introduce sunset shades into the warm-weather wardrobe mix. Just keep in mind the bolder the color or print, the more understated the silhouette or cut. Should you be the woman who can’t live without her neutrals, experiment with hues that go beyond the comfort zone by injecting small amounts of the sunset shades into your warm-weather looks with accessories (scarf, belt, shoe, jewelry), a tee or cami, or dress in a cut you adore.

Everyday Silks:

I’m such an enthusiast of silk for everyday dressing. It seems designers share my enthusiasm too! No longer should you reserve your silk pieces for dressier occasions. Now, silk reports to work, plays on the weekend, escapes for vacation, and goes everywhere in-between. Today’s silk garments are not overly frilly or complicated, but rather simple everyday essentials. Select simple silhouettes and shapes to freshen the warm-weather closet and elevate style. Consider an easy-fit crepe de chine tee/cami, or a liquid organza camp shirt, or an asymmetrical satin slip dress, or an accordion pleat georgette skirt, or a wide-leg twill pant. Introducing everyday silks into the wardrobe mix is one of the easiest to make the warm-weather collection relevant.

Head-to-Toe Beige:

Beige made an appearance in almost every designer collection and hands-down is the season’s standout hue. Designer runway collections favored the layering and wearing of beige from head-to-toe. At first glance, the beige trend may appear to be tonal or monochromatic dressing, but a closer examination underlines the layers of tailored beige separates. When considering the head-to-toe beige look, purchase matching tailored separate such as pants, jacket, skirt, because beiges can be tricky to match perfectly. Use different textures and fabrics to mix various shades of beige. Beige can be a difficult color to wear if you have a deeper complexion, add a bold color  (such as the sunset shades) to give it warmth and to create depth and contrast. One can still enjoy dressing in beige without immersing in the head-to-toe look — Beige is a neutral and pairs well with many warm-weather hues.

Tailored Shorts & Short Suits:

The tailored pant suit has been sashaying on the runway for several  seasons. For spring/summer 2019 the pant suit gives way to shorts paired with a matching jacket. The Porter’s Edit lists the short suit as one of season’s biggest trends. For Spring/Summer 2019, shorts sit higher on the waist and are cut in a longline silhouette, at times with front pleats, and a hemline that hits just above the knee. Most designer collections styled the shorts with a matching jacket, tucked-in blouses, and sleek sandals (flat or heel). The modest length of the shorts and matching jacket make it an appropriate alternative to the pant suit for chic summer cityscape dressing. However, the shorts can as easily be styled down with a tucked in tee and sneakers for the weekend.

Beauty in Utility:

The season’s freshest trend combines fashion and function. For spring 2019, fashion attempts to bridge the deep chasm between opposing views: Form or function? Style or utility? It’s a seasonal update of utilitarian fundamentals refashioned with a harmonious amalgamation of style and substance.  Rethink any preconceived notions that jumpsuits, cargo pants, safari jackets, field vests, bomber jackets, camp shirts, chambray shirts, and coveralls with their work-friendly features and streamlined efficiency can’t deliver a sophisticated sensibility by which to get dressed. Style your utility pieces for the office with tailored cuts and luxe textiles. For off-duty downplay the rugged, tough bravado with soft silk shirts and simple cotton tanks.

Summer White:

Vibrant prints and optimistic pops of color may be one of the hottest trends for the season, but only one color is synonymous with the arrival of summer to me — white. And designers seem to agree. The wearing of white requires minimal styling details and perpetuates the elegance of warm-weather dressing.  Like beige it can be worn from head-to-toe with accents of caramel, metallic, or tried and true black.  Pair white with the vivid sunset shades and it is content to take the back seat and let these hues pop. For day a simple LWD, worn with a blazer and hoops — for evening just add a bright lip color and heels.
